Building knowledge in an integrated way in the formative journey of undergraduate students
The Scientific Initiation Program is aimed at the development of scientific thinking and the initiation of research in undergraduate students. It consists of developing a research project for 12 months, supported by an advisor, on a theme of common interest between student and professor.
ESPM offers three types of Scientific Initiation scholarships:
- PIC/ESPM Scholarships
- PIBIC/CNPq
- Scientific Initiation/FAPESP

Scientific initiation projects funded exclusively by ESPM
- Based on the student's theme of interest
PIBIC
CNPq
Projects with ESPM support, and CNPq funding and approval
- From the choice of a research project linked to the institution
Scientific Initiation
FAPESP
Projects funded by FAPESP - with incentive to research internship abroad.
- Based on the student's theme of interest

As bolsas terão a duração de até doze meses, sendo possível uma renovação.
The renewal must be done with the same supervisor and scholarship holder, even if the research project is replaced.

One of the great possibilities that Scientific Initiation provides is for you to grow critically, you end up being more than just a mere receiver of information. You end up thinking, evaluating and thus proposing different things. You can have another look. This is very good for the growth of the student and researcher.
The scientific initiation at ESPM provided me with a qualified insertion into academic research. From it, I wrote articles and was selected to present the results of my work in other educational institutions. This experience was decisive for me to enter the master's program that I am currently taking part in in France.
Why do PIC? It is a difficult question, but it has a simple answer.
The PIC helps the student's reasoning and organization, with it I was able to do better in common subjects. I learned to organize reports, go deeper into the subjects and identify the important points.
Participating in the PIC was an incredible experience. In addition to delving into relevant topics for my professional training, I worked on my power of synthesis and developed quantitative and qualitative research techniques, experiencing and putting into practice everything I learned in the classroom and that I now use in the labor market.
I started the Scientific Initiation Program at ESPM in my 3rd semester of college. As a journalism student, the language I worked in during the program was totally different from a style I was getting used to working in - more loose and journalistic. However, getting closer to the research object and the academic language awakened my curious eye for the scientific field. This approach, moreover, facilitated the production of scientific articles during the course and also made, in my opinion, the production of the final course work, the TCC, something very pleasurable to do.
Participating in the PIC program at ESPM was very important for my education, not only academically. I felt easier in most of the scientific projects inside the university, besides already having a notion of a series of references. Today I strongly consider pursuing a career in research, and this would not have happened without the PIC experience.
The completion of the Scientific Initiation Research is something I am very proud of. I was able to spend a year having very rich discussions with my advisors, two brilliant professors that serve as examples to me until today. Furthermore, I can put on my resume that, besides studying in an excellent and very renowned college, I was able to participate in a research program that will certainly bear fruit for me, especially since it has so much to do with the career I intend to pursue.
I define the PIC as a unique experience, one of the most important in my graduation. It gave me many opportunities related to the job market, besides all the prestige of obtaining knowledge through scientific research. It also gave me all the basis to do a quality TCC, and today I am an intern in a large company in the marketing area.
I saw the potential of the approaches studied in the construction of a holistic vision. Every journey I made was a great challenge, it improved my reading habit, expanded my repertoire in the area, and facilitated the assimilation of content from the regular course. I developed: research capacity, creation of solutions, discipline, organization, capacity to adapt to the writing and formatting norms, commitment and co-authorship work.
Thanks to the PIC and my dear advisor, I awakened to research in order to understand Design from another angle, not the practical and conceptual, but academic one. This is how I understood that the limit of understanding is imposed by none other than myself, and I learned how to learn.
The PIC contributed a lot to my professional and personal growth, since I had the opportunity to research a subject that I like and had to overcome several challenges along the way. The results were amazing and it is a great differential in my resume, both professionally and academically.
Participating in a research fellowship for a year allowed me to fully immerse myself in areas of interest to produce something unique. It was a great experience that brought me a lot of growth, because research is something that motivates you to want more, to go beyond the obvious, and this is something you take with you to any activity in your life.
Performing and concluding the Scientific Initiation was a very rewarding experience for me. It is very pleasurable to be able to study something of my choice for a year, even receiving guidance and support from a professor as qualified as Demetrius and from a recognized institution such as ESPM. I learned a lot, and learning is something that no one can take away from us. Thank you!
Participating in the Scientific Initiation Project was the most important experience of my academic life. Being able to propose a research of my interest and develop it for a whole year with the financial support offered by the university was very pleasant. In addition to deepening my knowledge about something I like, I was able to get in touch with professionals who are references in my area, and among these meetings I was able to get a position in the magazine where I always wanted to work
Scientific initiation allowed me to develop my academic skills. The year spent researching introduced me to a completely new topic of study and required my commitment. The process was very rewarding, I participated in research groups and wrote papers, including participating in an international conference at the University of Tromso in Norway where I presented a paper that I co-authored.
Participating in the PIC of ESPM helped me a lot to create my PGD in my Design course, and it was where I discovered one of the paths I wanted to follow in my professional life, the academic path. In 2014 I will present my TCC in my post-graduation course that focuses on teaching in higher education, which will help me to follow my next path towards a Master's degree and teaching.
To have participated as a Scientific Initiation Fellow was very important for my education and for the knowledge of an area that I admire a lot and that incites me to study: the field of brands. Through this study, I have deepened the literature, met numerous people and among them executives and world-renowned authors, had direct contact with the market and even produced two articles to be presented at an international and a national congress, in addition to the rich exchange of knowledge with my supervisor

A Coordenação do Programa de Iniciação Científica organiza a atividade cujo objetivo consiste em instrumentalizar – em termos técnicos e metodológicos – os estudantes interessados em elaborar o projeto de pesquisa que será alvo da avaliação no curso do processo seletivo, previsto pelo programa. Um professor da área de metodologia científica desenvolve uma oficina sobre os conteúdos básicos de um projeto de pesquisa.
